The World Is Changing – But Are We Keeping Up?

From the way we grow our food to the way we communicate with each other in a digital age, these are just a couple of the hot topics explored at the latest Berwins Salon North event in Harrogate.

Sustainability expert Mike Berners-Lee will discuss climate action and ask “who’s really in control?” Joining him at The Crown Hotel on April 10 is food policy expert Stuart Gillespie who will explain why the global food system is failing – and how we can fix it - and author Louisa Guise who dives into the world of digital detoxing.

Voted number six in the ‘Top 100 Things to do in the World’ by GQ magazine, these unique cabaret-style evenings, sponsored by Berwins Solicitors, bring together three guest speakers for an evening of entertainment and bold ideas interspersed with intervals allowing time for a chat with a friend over a drink from the bar.

Tackling climate change is one of the most pressing challenges facing the world today, but what actions actually make a difference? Mike Berners-Lee, author of acclaimed books such as How Bad Are Bananas and There Is No Planet B, gets to the nub of the matter.

In our technology-driven age people are constantly connected, but at what cost? Digital communications expert Louisa Guise, author of How to Leave a Group Chat, explores how our relationship with technology is shaping modern life and whether we can ever truly switch off in a hyper-connected world

They are joined by Stuart Gillespie, a global expert in food policy and public health who has spent 40 years working with the UN to improve nutrition worldwide. He will reveal how our global food systems are failing us and what needs to be done to make them healthier, fairer and more sustainable.

Sharon Canavar, Harrogate International Festivals Chief Executive, said: “With three brilliant speakers, one great host and a fabulous evening of entertainment, the hugely popular Salon events continue to go from strength to strength.

“This is not your typical night out – expect to leave with your mind buzzing with new ideas and a host of facts to demonstrate your newfound knowledge!”
