Primary School Children Shine in Essay Competition, Celebrated at Prestigious Awards Luncheon

Harrogate Ladies’ College launched its annual Inspirational Woman Essay Competition earlier this year on International Women’s Day.

1st prize winners from each age category, from the following schools:
- Lady Lane Park School and Nursery
- Richmond House School
- Tockwith C Of E Primary School

The competition was the fourth event of their key stage 2 enrichment programme which is open to pupils in Year 3, 4 and 5 from both independent and state schools across Yorkshire.

The finalists of the 'Inspirational Woman Essay Competition' were invited to a Luncheon at Harrogate Ladies’ College last Wednesday, where the runners up and winners of each age category were presented with certificates and book vouchers by College Principal Sylvia Brett.

The top 3 prize winners from each age category had their essays read out by inspirational women!

One of the finalist's parents commented;

'The finalists' luncheon was a really lovely experience which we got to enjoy together, as a family. The competition gave our daughter a goal, and since placing 3rd, has really boosted her confidence. She’s already talking about entering again next year!'

Book prizes worth £50 were awarded for 1st places in each age category, £20 for 2nd places in each category and £10 for 3rd places in each category. There were also £50 book vouchers for each first-placed school.

The competition gives children the opportunity to write an essay about a female figure they have been inspired by. The pupils can write about anyone, it could be their grandmother, a sportsperson, a historical figure, an artist, musician or literary figure.

College Principal Sylvia says;

‘You may ask why Inspirational Woman was the topic of the essay. Well, International Women’s Day was created to shine a spotlight on brilliant women around the world. As an all girls’ school and to coincide with this year’s International Women’s Day, we asked the children from right across the region to tell us about the women that have inspired them most’

Sylvia adds;

‘Congratulations to all the finalists, we had nearly 100 entries and we loved reading each and every one! We can't wait to see what everyone writes about next year!’
