NYnet joins LoRa Alliance® to boost IoT growth in rural North Yorkshire, using LoRaWAN®

North Yorkshire technology firm NYnet has joined the LoRa Alliance® as it seeks to maximise the benefits of the LoRaWAN® technology it has deployed across the region in partnership with North Yorkshire Council.

The LoRa Alliance is an open, non-profit association, with members working collaboratively as a think tank and education body to share knowledge and manage and develop the LoRaWAN® standard for Internet of Things (IoT) solutions across many verticals, including agriculture, buildings, cities, industry & manufacturing, logistics, and utilities.

NYnet and North Yorkshire Council have already worked together to transform England’s biggest rural county into a smart county through deployment of a LoRaWAN Network covering over 85% of the geographical area of North Yorkshire. The project was supported by a £3m grant from York and North Yorkshire Local Enterprise Partnership, awarded North Yorkshire County Council to deliver the LoRaWAN network and wi-fi in 20 town centres.

Last year NYnet rolled out over 100 LoRaWAN gateways, on structures including street columns, schools, fire stations and communications masts. The project has continued to deliver further gateways and develop the first off-grid gateway using solar and wind power.

The region’s strategy to become a smart county has seen the integration of smart technologies and applications into the everyday life of North Yorkshire and its residents, covering all aspects of council operations including social care, parking and public health. Benefits are now being generated from initiatives such as parking, bins and air quality monitoring in schools.

NYnet is now openly exploring private sector partnerships to maximise the network’s impact on the region and explore innovation projects that can be supported by LoRaWAN.

Alastair Taylor, CEO of NYnet, said: “Becoming part of the LoRa Alliance is a transformational step for NYnet and one that has the potential to bring huge benefits to our region.

“The collaboration will open up opportunities for innovation as we discover how the network can help property and landowners, businesses, communities and those operating services in North Yorkshire to improve efficiency, security and long range digital communication.

“We are looking forward to sharing our own knowledge with others in this exciting industry and benefitting from the ideas and innovations that others are putting forward throughout the UK and globally.”

Donna Moore, CEO and Chairwoman of the LoRa Alliance, said: “I am pleased to welcome NYnet to the LoRa Alliance ecosystem. Their work highlights the value of LoRaWAN, by bringing connectivity to rural areas and demonstrating how the deployment of one use case easily and cost effectively leads to the deployment of additional use cases on the same

LoRaWAN network. Partnering with other LoRa Alliance members is key in driving NYnet goals of making deployments more accessible to end-users.”
