National Apprenticeship Week 2025

This week is #nationalapprenticeshipweek.

As a HR Consultant, I have seen a number of my clients recruit and develop apprentices as part of their HR strategy to grow and nurture their own team, and succession planning for the future.

For businesses, the benefits are developing an employee’s skills, knowledge and experience whilst they are working for you and contributing to your business.

For employees, an apprenticeship offers the chance to learn in their chosen career whilst they are earning, and offer an alternative to university or further education.

But what is an apprentice, and how do you go about recruiting and supporting them?

  • Apprentices are aged 16 or over and combine working with studying to gain skills and knowledge in a specific job.

  • Apprentices can be new or current employees, so you can develop existing staff through apprenticeships.

  • Apprentices have a contract of employment setting out their terms and conditions in the same way as any other employee.

  • You must pay the apprentice at least the national minimum wage.

To recruit an apprentice, you need to take the following steps:

  1. Decide what apprenticeship you want to offer which will meet the needs of your business.

  2. Check if you can get help with the cost of an apprentice

  3. Advertise the apprenticeship and interview prospective candidates.

  4. Develop a training plan - you must pay your apprentice for time spent training or studying for their apprenticeship.

Apprentices must get time off during their working week for apprenticeship training.

The training might take place at work, college or training provider and/or online.
