Mr Harrogate! A tribute from his friend and Past President Mark Lancaster

Although not originally from the town, Brian Dunsby had the passion and zeal to ensure Harrogate punched way above its weight as if he were born and bred.

Brian Dunsby OBE 22 January 1940 to 4 January 2025

Therefore, it was with great sadness that I learned of the passing of a friend and colleague.

Brian was a remarkable individual whose tireless efforts left an indelible mark on the town of Harrogate. I had the privilege of first meeting Brian in 1999 at a Harrogate Chamber of Trade and Commerce meeting; from that moment on, it was clear that he was a man of extraordinary vision, dedication and passion for improving the town’s economy and prosperity.

Brian was not just a staunch advocate for Harrogate’s economic growth; he was a catalyst for change. Through his role with the Chamber, he brought together people, business leaders, local government representatives and community stakeholders to collaborate on initiatives that would make Harrogate a thriving hub of commerce and tourism. His ability to see the bigger picture and connect the dots between seemingly disparate sectors was nothing short of inspiring.

Working alongside Brian and Beryl at the Harrogate Chamber of Trade and Commerce, I witnessed a prolific work rate that was often hard to keep up with. Bearing in mind all of this work was done voluntarily, Brian’s late-night emails were legendary. I worked with Brian on projects such as The Harrogate (later The Yorkshire) Business Market, countless transport projects and The Harrogate Christmas Market.

Brian was passionate to the point of obsession with transportation and when there was a glimmer of hope that Harrogate could get better rail connectivity, there was only one man for the job. He went all the way to the top and contacted the minister for transport, no less. This impressed Rt Hon Phil Hammond, who mentioned Brian in a speech in the House of Commons. Needless to say, Harrogate got its direct trains to London and who do you think was on that first journey…

When Brian was awarded his OBE, it meant a trip down to London on the train, of course. Watching Brian receive his “gong” from Prince Charles at Buckingham Palace was truly memorable, but when we met up afterwards, his first words were “this is for Harrogate”. He wore his medal with pride and used its power to continue his work to promote Harrogate

His achievements are too numerous to list here but those who knew Brian know what he did.  With his tireless efforts to promote the town’s hospitality and retail sector, Brian always had Harrogate’s best interests at heart. His strategic approach and unyielding determination ensured that Harrogate was not only a wonderful place to live and work but also an attractive destination for visitors and investors alike.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Brian was a kind and generous individual. He had an incredible knack for making everyone feel valued and his words of encouragement often inspired those around him to aim higher and achieve more. Brian’s mentorship and guidance were instrumental in the growth of countless businesses and individuals in the community, myself included.

Brian’s legacy is one of dedication, service, and an unwavering commitment to making Harrogate a better place. While we mourn his passing, we must also celebrate the extraordinary life he led and the countless lives he touched. His efforts will continue to inspire those who work is to carry forward his vision for Harrogate.

My deepest condolences to Beryl, the children and the grandchildren. Rest in peace, Brian. You will be deeply missed, but your contributions to Harrogate will never be forgotten.
