Giving Local Primary School Children Opportunities To Create & Perform Since 2009

Since 2009 Harrogate Brigantes Rotary have been organising concerts for local primary school children at the Royal Hall. They began as fund-raisers for good causes but very soon it was realised that there was a greater importance to them – the opportunities they gave for local children to perform in our very special concert hall and to feel the excitement of a performance in a major venue to a packed audience.

So, starting in 2015 some of these concerts have involved the children not just in performance but in creating the music that they will perform. Rotarian Guy Wilson creates a script and finds an appropriate professional composer and then the two of them run workshops in schools helping the children to write the songs that help tell the story in the concert.  That process takes over two years and is not cheap. But it is very worthwhile.

This ground-breaking initiative was recognised by the national funding body Youth Music in 2001 when they agreed to provide a major grant towards 2023’s “The Last Dragon” which played to near full houses.

As Guy Wilson says,

“You know what it means to the children involved when , after all their hard work, they go into the Royal Hall and see where they will be performing what they have created. The look of wonder and amazement on their faces tells the story. All of them experience the amazing process of working together and creating something they didn’t know they were capable of. And  for some of them we hope the experience will not only be life-enhancing but life-changing. ”

Kids Aloud Youth Music Events next production is at the Royal Hall 1st March 2025 and will be a celebration of musicals from Gilbert and Sullivan to Encanto.

Our ask : Costs are rising, ticket prices alone do not cover all the production expenses.  To allow us to continue to provide opportunities for local children we need help.
