Gift Card Scam - Old scam doing the rounds again

North Yorkshire Police have recently received a report from a resident regarding an email purportedly coming from someone he knows well.

The resident was asked if he could help 'his friend' by purchasing an Apple gift card for his Niece who has been diagnosed with stage 4 mesothelioma cancer and it was her birthday and he wasn't able to buy the gift card as he was currently travelling.

He told the resident all the stores locally to him were out of stock and he had tried purchasing online but didn't have any luck, so could he help by going to a store close to him.

The person who had purportedly sent the email had been hacked and the message had been sent to everyone in their personal address book.

Sadly the resident fell victim to this scam and lost £300 and could have gone on to lose more.

If you receive a message like this please do not respond and always do your checks before going ahead to purchase such gift cards.
