An Exploration Of Quantum Fields, Digital Fields And Football Fields

The Berwins Salon North series returns to Harrogate’s Crown Hotel on November 14 when three special guests will delve into the worlds of sport, digital domination, and the wonders of physics.

Writer and editor Robert McCrum will reveal the captivating story of the penalty kick and how it changed football forever. He is joined by sociologist Nick Couldry who will take audiences on a journey into the hidden world of ‘data colonialism’ and how it affects every click, post, and likes we make online, whilst author Zahaan Bharmal who offers a fresh take on how science impacts our lives.

Sponsored by Berwins Solicitors, the TED-style talks - voted number six in the ‘Top 100 Things to do in the World’ by GQ magazine – explore big ideas in an intimate setting, based around relaxed, cabaret-style evenings where you can catch up with friends and enjoy a drink at the bar.

This latest trio of guest speakers will be hosted by writer, journalist and BBC Radio 4 broadcaster Kirran Shah in what promises to be a fun and thought-provoking evening.

Drawing on his personal family connection to football’s penalty kick, Robert McCrum will reveal how his great-grandfather’s invention in the 1880s revolutionised the sport, creating moments of high drama and fairness on the field. But this is more than just a story about football – it’s a journey through history, culture and even literature – as Robert discusses the broader implications of a rule that has shaped not only the beautiful game, but the way we think about fairness, decision-making and risk in everyday life.

Nick Couldry, Professor of Media, Communications and Social Theory at LSE, will argue that Big Tech is quietly seizing control over our most valuable resource – our personal data. He will show how this is being used to shape our behaviour, choices, and even our future. Nick will explain how we ended up here and, more importantly, what we can do about it.

Also joining them is ZahaanBharmal, whose new book The Art of Physics is published next month. He will explore how the most complex ideas in physics, like quantum mechanics and chaos theory, are deeply connected to the everyday questions we all ask, like why do relationships break down? and why do we make irrational decisions? He will also show that physics can unlock a deeper understanding of ourselves and the unpredictable world we live in.

Sharon Canavar, Harrogate International Festivals Chief Executive, said: “This is the last Berwins Salon North event of the year, and it looks set to be another absolute belter.

“The Salon Series is all about discussing big issues in a way that’s accessible, thought-provoking and fun, and this month’s subjects – which range from football to digital data – will no doubt make for another brilliant evening.

“Once again I’d like to thank headline sponsor, Berwins Solicitors, for their continued support in enhancing Harrogate’s reputation as a dynamic northern hub for arts and culture.”
